The Chronicle has admitted to publishing a bogus letter in the July 14 edition of Oliver’s weekly newspaper. A letter critical of Oliver Town Council, Mayor Pat Hampson and Councillor Jack Bennest is penned by no one known to local fire officers or the Chronicle staff.
Editor Lyonel Doherty admits staff placed the letter in the newspaper without checking whether the author was an actual person as signed “Rob Morrison“. The item was emailed to the Chronicle. It is normal policy for newspapers to check on letters submitted for publication. Doherty said the newspaper will attempt to remedy the damage done in the next issue.
I have one comment to make about this whole keggate. I agree with most people that it has been given too much coverage. One story was probably more than enough. Although it is nice to see a community get behind an issue, whether the comments were for or against the issue it got some good discussions going. Now lets move these discussions towards something useful like trying to get businesses and industry to this town. ( great ideas Kyle – ed)
